Selecting the Appropriate Structural Strengthening System: CRM, FRCM or CFRP?

Selecting the most suitable strengthening system is one of the most critical decisions in structural rehabilitation. While CRM, FRCM and CFRP systems are all designed to improve structural performance, they address different engineering challenges and should not be viewed as interchangeable solutions.

CRM systems are typically used when the objective is to improve the global behavior of masonry structures. By combining composite meshes with structural mortars, CRM systems enhance wall integrity, increase shear resistance and improve seismic performance. They are particularly effective for masonry buildings, heritage structures and large-scale strengthening interventions.

FRCM systems combine high-performance fibers with inorganic cementitious matrices. Their compatibility with masonry substrates, vapor permeability and resistance to high temperatures make them particularly suitable for historic buildings and conservation projects where maintaining material compatibility is essential.

CFRP systems utilize carbon fiber reinforcements bonded with resin matrices. Due to their exceptional strength-to-weight ratio, CFRP solutions are widely used to strengthen reinforced concrete beams, slabs and columns without significantly increasing structural dimensions or dead loads.

The optimal strengthening solution depends on structural objectives, substrate conditions, environmental exposure and long-term performance requirements. Successful rehabilitation projects are driven not by selecting the strongest material, but by selecting the most appropriate technology for the specific engineering challenge.
